Trusted Corporate Tax Training

ExtraTax Training delivers bespoke UK and Irish corporate tax training to professional services firms and multinationals. Our tutors bring decades of experience from practice, industry and HMRC, so your team gets training that goes beyond the legislation into how the rules apply.

The problem we solve

Corporate tax teams are expected to advise confidently across an ever-growing range of rules, including capital allowances, interest deductibility, loss relief, anti-avoidance, and now Pillar Two.

Most training falls to partners and directors, designed and delivered around full client workloads, so it happens as time allows rather than as a structured programme.

We design and deliver that training for you, pitched to your people and scheduled around your client commitments.

How we work with you

We don't arrive with a fixed syllabus. Every engagement starts with a conversation about your team and your business, and the programme is designed from there.

Understand

Your people, their experience levels, the nature of your work, and where you want the team to be in the years ahead.

Design

A programme built around those needs, covering the right topics at the right depth, refined with your input.

Deliver

Online, in person or a mix of both, scheduled around your priorities. Interactive, exercise-led sessions using scenarios your team will recognise.

Refine

Your feedback shapes the programme as it runs, and we adjust content and emphasis in response. What we learn with each cohort improves the next.

What a bespoke programme can look like

Every programme is different. Three examples from recent client work demonstrate the range, and how the same topic can be pitched differently for different audiences.

Example 1: A specialist technical programme, tiered by experience

A leading UK accounting firm asked us to build their team's capability on the Corporate Interest Restriction (CIR), one of the most technically demanding areas of UK corporate tax. Rather than one generic course, we designed a tiered programme:
  • An introductory module for junior staff — an overview of the CIR, its key terms, and applying the rules to a simple group scenario, with participants working through a calculation live in the session.
  • A fundamentals module for experienced staff — working directly with the legislation to understand definitions and calculations, the group ratio, carried-forward balances, and administration including elections.
  • Supporting materials and assessment — pre-reading via our online learning platform, an online test to check understanding, and a group case study worked through and discussed together in an online class.

Throughout the programme, we worked closely with the firm's CIR specialist, refining the content between modules as his view of the team's needs developed. The team now handles the CIR issues they see regularly, calling on specialist support only where a case is genuinely complex. The same tiered approach works for any technical area.

Example 2: A rolling Lunch & Learn programme

For a rapidly expanding UK firm, we deliver a monthly one-hour Lunch & Learn series for the wider tax team. With the topics chosen by the firm to match their client work and development priorities. A recent year's schedule included:
  • Corporate tax considerations for PE-backed companies and groups
  • UK corporate losses
  • Fundamentals of transfer pricing
  • Loan relationships
  • Double tax treaties and double tax relief
  • Controlled foreign companies
  • Senior Accounting Officer and publication of tax strategy
  • Pillar Two and the UK's Multinational and Domestic Top-up Taxes
  • Corporate chargeable gains
  • Pre year-end tax planning
  • Capital allowances updates
  • Employment taxes overview

The series doubles as the firm's rolling corporate tax update. The schedule is refreshed each year around legislative change — Finance Act measures, new regimes and recent case law — so the team stays current without anyone having to design an update programme internally. Sessions can be recorded and made available on our secure learning platform, so the training reaches the whole team, including those with client commitments on the day.

Example 3: A case study building more than technical skills

For a Top 10 firm's UK corporate and international tax team, we delivered a multi-session programme that began with double tax treaties, residence and permanent establishment, then moved on to the UK's Corporate Interest Restriction, hybrid mismatch rules and broader international financing issues.

The firm had shared that their managers needed opportunities to take responsibility for projects. Therefore, we designed a closing case study to weave together the issues covered across the programme, with teams managing a budget, delegating the work and presenting their advice to the 'client'. Managers led each team, with senior colleagues limited to a light-touch review, giving the managers a safe setting to carry final responsibility for technical advice, building the confidence and judgement they'll draw on with real clients.

Your programme might look like one of these, combine elements of them, or be something different again, such as a single workshop on one technical area or a pathway that develops your team over several years. The starting point is always a conversation about what your team needs.

We also deliver corporation tax fundamentals and refresher training, for new joiners, returners to the profession, and teams in general practice who want to strengthen their grounding. For specialist areas, such as reorganisations and demergers, we work with trusted associates who follow our practical approach.

Where your needs extend into international tax or transfer pricing, we offer tailored training in those areas too. For Irish tax topics, we work with leading Irish specialists, including former senior Revenue officials.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a fixed course or is it tailored to our firm?

Every programme is tailored. We agree the topics, depth, format and schedule with you, and refine the content with your input. The examples on this page show what other firms have commissioned.

Can the same topic be pitched at different experience levels?

Yes, that's often the right design. For one firm we delivered the Corporate Interest Restriction as an introductory module for junior staff and a separate legislation-based fundamentals module for experienced staff, so each group got the depth they needed.

What formats do you offer?

Everything from one-hour Lunch & Learn sessions through half-day workshops to year-long modular programmes with case studies and assessments. Training can be online, in person or a mix of both, and sessions can be recorded for your team to access on our secure learning platform.

Can you provide regular tax update training?

Yes. Our Lunch & Learn format works as a rolling corporate tax update programme, with the schedule refreshed each year around Finance Act changes, new regimes and recent case law. Your whole team stays current without anyone having to design an update programme internally.

Do you offer corporation tax fundamentals training?

Yes. We deliver fundamentals and refresher training on core corporation tax topics. This training suits new joiners, staff returning to the profession, and general practice teams building a stronger technical grounding, and often works well as the first stage of a longer development programme.

For example, we delivered two half-day sessions for a mixed tax team on UK Corporation Tax covering:
  • Calculating Taxable Total Profits
  • Corporation Tax Rates, including Marginal Relief
  • Corporate Loss Relief
  • Instalment Payments
  • Associated Companies
  • Capital Allowances
  • Tax Incentives
  • Interest Deductibility
  • Cross-Border Tax Issues
  • Transfer Pricing

Do you cover Irish corporate tax as well as UK?

Yes. We deliver Irish corporation tax training, working with leading Irish tax specialists alongside our core team. Topics range from fundamentals through to complex issues, such as the Interest Limitation Rule, dividend participation exemption and hybrid mismatch rules.

For example, we supported students from a Top 10 firm and the Revenue Commissioners studying for Part 3 of the Irish CTA qualification.

Do you cover tax accounting?

Yes. We deliver training on tax accounting topics, including deferred tax, tax provisioning and disclosures in financial statements, pitched to tax teams, audit teams or finance teams as needed.

How interactive are the sessions?

Very. Participant numbers are capped, sessions are built around exercises and discussions, and larger programmes include group case studies where teams produce deliverables and present to a 'client'.

How do we get started?

Contact us to arrange a call. We'll listen to what you're trying to build, ask about your team, and come back with a proposed programme designed around your needs.
